SB-10: Money Bail Bill

People Over Profits-SD and the ACLU of California is working with several organizations to co-sponsor SB 10: The California Money Bail Reform Act of 2017, the bill will reform California's money bail system by ensuring that people are not kept in jail simply because they cannot bail to buy their freedom, this bill would take into account socio-economic and other backgrounds into consideration, and bail would not exceed 5% of the individual’s income and would provide a special overseeing counsel over the judge’s discretion (case per case basis). Adding to mass incarceration the predatory bail industrial complex is containing 60% of individuals in county jail because they cannot afford their bail. SB 10 was approved by the Assembly public safety committee and will not be considered by the Assembly appropriations committee before going up for a floor vote.
